Roosevelt Senior Wins Top Scholarship

Roosevelt Senior Lucia Ruppert and 14 other Iowa high school seniors presented their projects for the Uncommon Student Awards at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch, IA last Saturday.

The Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award is a scholarship program for Iowa high school juniors. The program annually identifies and honors up to 15 Iowa high school juniors who propose and then accomplish a project of their own choosing and design. Grades, test scores, essays and financial need are not evaluated.

After an entire day of inspirational and educational presentations on subject matters ranging from STEM, human trafficking, wind energy and more, each student was awarded a $1000 scholarship.

The Hoover Presidential Foundation, sponsor of the award, then picks 3 of the 15 students for a $5,000 scholarships, and Roosevelt’s Lucia Ruppert was 1 of the 3.

Ruppert authored “The Adventures of Lucy & Lulu,” a children’s book that she wrote, illustrated and self-published. The story follows a girl and her American Red Cross volunteer family as they help people all over the world. The book shows children that they can help in the smallest of ways, makes disasters less scary and for every book purchased for $10 one is donated to the Red Cross to be handed out to young disaster victims.

Ruppert has worked very hard over the past year putting this book together, this includes fundraising and even dipping into her college savings.

She has already sold over 100 books, donated another 100 to the American Red Cross and she is just getting started!
