On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s madness—or genius—will she inherit?

Proof is an award winning play by David Auburn. We have chosen to do this play because of its challenges, rewards and educational value. The challenges of this show are discovering the subtext and the meaning and purpose of this wonderful text. The educational value lies in the work it takes to bring these characters to life. The actors have spent weeks diving into the analysis of the text. The importance of what you say and how you say it is a consistent theme throughout the show. The rewards of this show come when these actors can fully dive into these characters of the night of the show.

The idea of Hope keeps coming back to us in the rehearsal process, why do we need to have proof of something? We need something to be proven when there is the absence of Hope, and hope breaks down to Faith, and faith breaks down to trust. We only need proof when we don’t trust in something or someone.

Roosevelt Theatre is a strong educational program where students have the freedom and opportunity to design, create and lead technical crews as well as perform and create memorable characters onstage. Alumni come in to give back to every production in so many ways from directing to technical work.
